VisualisationBattery storage at the Breitenbich substation
Directly next to the Breitenbich substation in Thüringen, close to the Büttstedt wind farm, the GERES-Group is planning a battery storage system. The substation is owned by the group itself. The storage system uses lithium-ion technology from Huawei in a modular container design, has an output of 18 megawatts and holds 40 megawatt hours. It will be connected at 30 kilovolts to the group’s own substation.
The groundwork is in place: the site is secured, and the grid operator has already approved the feed-in. The municipality also supports the project.
A battery storage system takes up electricity when more is generated than consumed and releases it again later. This allows it to absorb surplus wind and solar power, provide balancing power for grid stability (primary, secondary and minute reserve) and help ensure that wind farms need to be curtailed less often because of grid congestion. As with the wind farms, part of the added value stays in the region: through municipal participation and through income from leases, taxes and local contracts.
